Collection: Johanna Carrington

Johanna Josephs Carrington paints primarily in oils using bright colors and distinctive brush work. She is inspired by the natural world - often painting landscapes, marshes, and her garden. She likes images which evoke feelings of peace, joy or recall a happy experience.

While pursuing an Architectural History degree at UVa in the 80’s, Johanna attended a summer study program in Italy. She began sketching regularly and creating watercolor renderings. This ignited her passion for painting. She still describes the thrill of putting down that first inky black mark on the pure white paper. Craving more vibrant colors and bigger pieces, she transitioned to oil.

Johanna and her husband both grew up in Richmond, and moved to the Northern Neck in 2009. They quickly realized that she’d landed in a painter’s paradise and set up her studio overlooking the cove. Their three adult kids visit regularly, and Lucy and Hoss the family yellow labs are constant companions in the studio.
